ADSL technology converts your normal telephone line into a super fast digital connection capable of delivering data at speeds up to 10 times faster than when using a conventional dial up modem.
What is ADSL?
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It's a technology used to send digital information over standard copper telephone lines and is called 'asymmetric' because data is sent more quickly from the Jersey Telecom telephone exchange to you than from you to Jersey Telecom telephone exchange. This makes it ideal for applications where you receive far more information than you send, such as when you're surfing web pages or downloading large data files such as digital audio visual material.
How does it work?
The technology works by sending two signals over the same line. The telephony signal carries the information required for normal telephone or fax calls and the ADSL signal carries high speed data traffic.
Two sophisticated ADSL modems are placed on the line, one at the user end and one in Jersey Telecom telephone exchange, which filter and control the two signals. This means you can surf the net at super fast speeds and make or receive telephone calls at the same time.
What else can ADSL do?
Apart from giving you download speeds up to ten times faster than with conventional dial-up modems, ADSL is also a flat rate 'always on' service.
This means that once you have ADSL installed you pay a fixed monthly service charge for as much high speed access as you want, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Connection to the Internet is almost instantaneous and there are no more Internet call charges to worry about.
With your localdial ADSL account you have access to iPass, iFolder, Icalendaring, Webmail, SMS and email domain name hosting.
What's different about surfing with ADSL?
In a word, SPEED!
With ADSL you'll be surfing at up to 512Kbps, much faster than even the latest 56k modems.
- Surfing the net will become far more enjoyable because pages appear almost instantly, there's no more waiting for graphics to download.
- With an 'always on' connection you can pick up your e-mail in a matter of seconds
- Downloading large file attachments becomes quick and painless, minutes instead of hours!
- You can access multimedia rich content ten times faster than with a conventional modem; MP3 files movie clips and on-line games.
- You also have access to iPass, iFolder, Icalendaring, Webmail, SMS and email domain name hosting.
- Unlimited support at local call rates.

For a fixed monthly fee of just £24.49 payable by creditcard only, you can have as much high speed Internet access as you want, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! There are no additional dial up charges and with ADSL, you have a choice of the following installation options, outlined in the table below:

Because you can make and receive telephone calls normally whilst using ADSL you will be billed for line rental and telephone calls according to whichever tariff option you choose to subscribe to. Changing your line tariff is free of charge.
What will I need to get ADSL?
Because the ADSL service is provided over an ordinary telephone line, you'll need to either already have an existing working line at the premises where you require ADSL or, apply for telephone service. (ADSL can be fitted at the same time as a new line, if required). You will also need a suitable PC or Apple Macintosh.
Your choice of modem will depend on the specification of your computer.

A We aim for a minimum 4 working day target for all connections.

A Speed. It provides high speed digital access (up to 512Kbps downstream and 256Kbps upstream). This is approximately 10 times faster than the latest conventional modems.

Flat rate. You pay a fixed monthly fee for as much access as you want. There are no more Internet call charges to worry about.

Q What is the contention ratio for ADSL?
A This has been set in Jersey Telecom telephone exchanges at 40:1 for Home users and 20:1 for Business Pro users.
Q How am I assigned an IP address?
A You will be dynamically assigned an IP address each time you access the service, or at an interval decided upon by us, whichever is the shorter period of time
Q Do I need security?
A Although not inherently unsafe, ADSL users will probably be on-line for a longer time than those using a dial-up connection. For this reason we advise all users to install anti-virus software.
