I'd just started at St. Martin's College Lancaster which was mainly populated by hairy types who wore Afghan coats had sported bumfluff beards. The men were pretty similar. Needless to say they were all into Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. This was because they considered themselves to be 'individuals', and not slaves to fashion or convention. As 'individuals they all dressed like that and listened to that kind of music. On hearing about my passion for Northern Soul one of them had the cheek to accuse me of being 'blinkered' and being 'limited' in my musical tastes. I replied, "I like all kinds of music, Northern Soul, Deep Soul, Commercial Soul and Funky Soul. Everything else is Biz." So bizarre did they find this view that it appeared in the following edition of the college magazine as 'Quote of the Week'. Yep, the Alien from another planet had arrived. |
