Normally I'm pretty brave at tackling massive volumes on Soul music, but even I had to balk at this one. It is unquestionably the biggest reference reference work on soul music I have seen. In total it is 900 pages of very tight script. The book really begins by describing the different styles of soul music and their numerous offshoots right up to the present day. All styles are covered by the book with the exception of the modern derivatives of rap and hip hop. From there we move into a massive listing of artists all arranged into alphabetical order. In the case of groups we are told the year they formed and the date they disbanded. For individual artists we are told the year they were born and where appropriate the year they died. We are also told the various styles the artist or group performed in. This is followed by a short history and details of their releases. Clearly major artists are given greater paper space than those more minor. The book ends with reviews of compilations produced by more than one artist, a series of essays on different soul forms and music maps of the different styles. Given that soul has so many one hit, or even no hit wonders, an exhaustive encyclopaedia is all but impossible, but without doubt this is the nearest thing I have seen. |
