As the title suggests this book is about the stars of all Black Music, not just Soul. It covers about 120 artists from the worlds of Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Rap, Soul and African Music of which 35 might be considered Soul Artists of some sort. The book is organised so that each artist is given a full page Black and White Photograph on the Left side and a page of information on the Right. The information provided is the dates of birth/death; achievements; influences; some personal details about their lives and their most significant works. It is a very tidy and well presented book but a little on the expensive side at £16.99. Fortunately it is now turning up in the discount bookstores where it can be bought for half the price. By its very nature this book will appeal most to people who are general fans of Black Music rather than those with a specialist Soul Interest, not only because the number of soul artists is limited but also because those included are the 'giants' (Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding etc.) about whom much is already known. As a reference book it cannot begin to compare with the much more comprehensive 'Guinness Who's Who of Soul'. Having said that it does have some good introductory material and some fabulous photographs. For pure soul lovers there is probably not enough in this book to justify its cost, but if you're into black music as a whole then it is worth checking out.
