Neither a biography or a discography this is another tome for the soul musicians who are out there. A very surprising and adventurous publication in that only 'big' stars usually tend to get their sheet music published in book format. Although as a writer and producer Sam Dees output has been immense as a performer he is little known beyond soul circles. Credit must go to JPMC for putting this out and I would be surprised if commercial interests were their only motivation for doing so. If it is then I don't think their market research department can be doing their jobs properly. It is a bold release and I only hope it is one they make some profit by. The front cover is monopolised by Sam's Face sweating and belting out his lyrics. It is volume 1 of a 'Masters of Soul' series and is written for either piano or guitar. The book also contains the lyrics to his songs for the budding vocalist. These also make interesting reading, as so often with a soul song the lyric can get lost in a scream or a wail. The back page is another black and white photo of Sam wearing his shades and looking significantly more relaxed. Unusually for sheet music the centre pages contain a tribute and short biography to Sam written by veteran soul journalist John Ridley. As ever these are short, but to the point and well worth reading for an introduction to the artist. The last inner page contains adverts for Kent CD's "Second to None" by Sam Dees and "Careful Man" by John Edwards, who later became front man for the Detroit Spinners. The inclusion of the John Edwards advert is because several of the tracks on his CD were written by Sam. All the songs in the book can be heard on Sam's "Second to None" compilation. This book is clearly not aimed at the Soul Aficionado, but to the Soul Musician and offers the opportunity to re-create some wonderful music. I have to confess that the work of Sam Dees has been a favourite of mine for some time. The man's a poet and he rarely produces anything which is crass.
