Nothing frilly or pretentious about this publication, it is exactly what it claims to be, over five hundred trivia questions (Five Hundred and Thirty Three to be exact) about soul music. It is divided into three sections; fifties and sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties. Each section is given a brief introduction about the main artists and the characteristics of soul music within it. I suspect that most readers favour the era which best represents their teens, which for me was the seventies. Anyone able to perform consistently well across all three sections will truly be a soul scholar. Some of the questions offer no clues as to the correct answer whilst others are multiple choice. I found this particularly useful in the nineties section where I have to confess that I was floundering most of the time. If I have any irritation with the book it is that the questions were not distributed evenly across the sections. There were more from the fifties and sixties than the other two eras which may give us a clue as to the author's ages. For anybody whose interested my scores were 112 out of 209 for the fifties/sixties, 82 out of 144 for the seventies and 53 out of 179 for the eighties/nineties. The book has a bright and attractive front cover and there are several photographs of artists throughout its pages. All in all a very pleasant book, nothing too serious, just a good bit of fun. Anyone wanting a little taster might want to try their hand at some of the sample questions below:- Fifties/Sixties Recording artist Tammy Montgomery is best known by what name?
