Title: Bill Haney's Atlanta Soul Brotherhood (Volume 2)

This compilation is taken from Bill Haney's Southern Soul Label 'Chant' and from the tracks he leased to other record companies.  It is an album very much in the Stax tradition and although much smaller and less well known Chant's limited output seems every bit as good as that of its more illustrious competitor.  As one would expect from the southern states the sound is very gritty with a hefty helping of sax.  It has a healthy balance of slow, mid-tempo and more upbeat numbers but of the twenty six songs on the album twenty five are performed by male artists, and only one by a female. (From the track listings you might be fooled into thinking there are two, but unfortunately for him Gay Meadow's is a man).   This gives the album a very definite imbalance and by the time you reach Brenda Duff's 'Got to get to Know You' the gentle sound of a woman's voice  makes a very refreshing change.

Personal favourites on this CD are 'Miss Jackson's Daughter' and 'I Love Her More' by Randolph Walker and 'Wasting My Time Loving You' by Milton Marlin.  A very definite miss is 'My Mary, My Life' by Joe Graham.
