I have to confess a certain lack of impartiality when considering anything by Edwin Starr because as far as I am concerned this fella is one of the best and most professional soul artists of all time. He has certainly produced more good quality Northern Cuts than anyone else I can think of, and this CD contains more than its fair share. This particular album is one of a series of mid-priced offerings which consider the work of former Motown Legends. Just like the other compilations in the series it is a mixture of his more successful material such as SOS, Twenty-Five Miles and Headline News along with some of his lesser known songs such as 'If My Heart Could Tell A Story', 'Time Is Passin By' and 'Way Over There' . As one would expect from this man these tracks range between the mid-tempo and the speedy as the effervescent Edwin is incapable of singing a slow ballad even if he wanted to. At around £5 this album represents very good value and would appeal equally to both the Northern fraternity and the general soul fan alike, but it is unquestionably the old Motown Aficionados at whom it is aimed. Fabulous stuff! Go out and buy it!
