Why do Spectrum insist on using lower case letters to name their artists on the front cover? Do they not consider the Four Tops important enough to justify capitals? This is a little quirk about all the albums in this series which I find irritating. Just like the other 'Early Classics' CD's this compilation is taken from the Four Tops initial recordings, a time in which they were constrained by having to work to the 'Motown Formula'. The result is very pleasant on the ear but includes little variation or contrast throughout. The tracks themselves are a mixture of the Four Tops more commercial hits which will probably be familiar to most people, even outside the soul world ('Reach Out and I'll Be There', 'I Can't Help Myself', 'It's the Same Old Song') and their lesser known work ('Love Has Gone', 'Don't Turn Away', 'Ask the Lonely'). Many of these tracks however will be reasonably well known to the Northern Soul fraternity ('Tea House in Chinatown', 'I'm Grateful'). The series works to a tried and tested formula from which I am sure that Spectrum will achieve considerable success. They always include sufficient well-known tracks to give the compilations broad appeal. Not only will Northern Soul Fans, general soul lovers and Motown Addicts find something of interest on this CD, but it also has something for sixties pop lovers as well. Add to this the fact that it retails at about £5.00 and the reasons for the success of this series is easy to understand. Personal Favourites on this compilation are 'I Can't Help Myself', 'Your Love is Amazing' and 'Teahouse in Chinatown'.
