This compilation starts off at a thunderous pace with three rollicking Northern Soul Classics, Al Wilson's 'The Snake', Soul City's 'Everybody Dance Now' and Hank Jacobs' 'Elijah Rockin' With Soul'. Other soulful grooves include 'We Got A Thing That's In The Groove' by those 'Cool Jerk' boys The Capitols, 'If It's All The Same To You Babe' by Luther Ingram, 'Baby Don't You Do It' by The Poets and three further tracks from Billy Preston, The Soul Runners and the Luther Ingram Orchestra. It total there are ten tracks from a compilation of twenty three which could reasonably be classified as soul. After such a tremendous beginning the soul fan may be a little disappointed to find that the rest of it is made up of 'R&B' and 'Beat' records. Despite the fact much of this compilation is not Soul music many of the other tracks will still be familiar to the aficionado. This is because several of the beat numbers are cover versions of soul originals or conversely may be the originals of soul covers. The Bobby Fuller Four do a version of Melba Moore's 'Magic Touch', Truman Thomas covers Edwin Starr's '25 Miles' whilst The Powerhouse give a rather insipid performance of Sam Cooke's 'Chain Gang'. No question that it's an interesting compilation with some unusual tracks but as a die hard soulie I'm not sure that I'm entirely happy with the concept of this album. I've always regarded Goldmine as being a bastion of soul music and with the exception of their third 'Out On The Floor' compilation they've always given their devotees 'soul' in its purest form. This smacks of them having lost their way a bit, possibly because of a lack of new material to release. Kev Roberts might have been better putting this out on his KRL label with his 'North of Watford' Series rather than sully the purity of his 'Goldmine' label. It's an interesting offering, but of limited interest to the pure soul aficionado and will probably appeal more to the ageing mod. My favourite tracks are inevitably Hank Jacobs 'Elijah Rockin With Soul' and 'Exus Treck' by the Luther Ingram Orchestra, but I am quite getting to like Bo Junior's R&B style 'Coffee Pot'.
