Title: I'm A Loser

Ref: CDKEND242

Label: Kent Records

Doris Duke

This recent offering from Kent sees two vinyl albums, “I’m A Loser” and “A Legend In Her Own Time” released on one CD.  In addition there are three bonus tracks that Duke released under the pseudonym of Doris Willingham.  The album was produced by the legendary Jerry Williams, from whom I have never heard a bad track yet either as a singer or producer.  He clearly enjoyed working with Duke whose powerful voice; clear enunciation and emotional interpretation must have been every soul producers dream to work with.  The album comes in a mixture of tempos, but mainly in the middle range.  The main theme is that of broken relationships spiced by a hefty flavouring of self-blame.  Congratulations must go to Tony Rounce for the excellent liner notes, and a very nice touch by Kent is to include an article on the first of the vinyl albums written by the late Dave Godin.  In the article he describes, “I’m a Loser” as the best LP he has ever heard and was first published in ‘Blues and Soul’ issue 41.  Whilst I don’t think I would quite go that far there is no doubt that the quality is excellent, and in my view the material from the “I’m A Loser” album is much better than “A Legend In Her Own Time”.  The tracks most worthy of commendation are “Congratulations Baby”,  “Divorce Decree” and “To The Other Woman (I’m The Other Woman)”, but the standout track of the whole album is “I Don’t Care Anymore”.  It is the heartfelt story of the naive country girl who moves to the city to find work, gets herself into a bad marriage before escaping into a series of low paid jobs.  Finally she meets a man whom she thinks really cares but he just wants to set her up as a hooker.  Excellent ballad, beautifully produced and extremely well delivered.  In truth there isn’t a bad track on the album as they range between good and excellent.  As already stated the bulk of the really good ones appear on the first album, which form the first twelve tracks of the CD.  If Dave Godin had been here today he would have recommended every soul fan to buy a copy of this collection.
