This compilation is taken from the 'Invinctus' label which was formed by Holland Dozier Holland after their departure from Motown. It is unquestionably more Funk oriented than R&B. For me the best tracks are 'Love Factory' by Eloise Laws and 'Sliced Tomatoes' by the Just Brothers, but this might just be my Northern bias kicking in. Despite some success I never felt that the HDH team were ever quite as at home with Funk as they were with Motownesque type tunes. Many of the tracks on this album are very run of the mill, but thankfully it also contains some very good ones. Laura Lee's 'If I'm Good Enough To Love (I'm Good Enough To Marry)', Satisfaction Unlimited's 'Somebody Else's Woman' and Honey Cone's 'Want Ads' are all truly excellent. Like most soul compilations the main theme of the songs are 'relationships' so I always enjoy those tracks which deal with other issues. Harrison Kennedy's 'Sunday Morning People' is a pointed attack on the hypocrisy of church goers and he makes no attempt to pull any punches. Whilst this is a fabulous socio-political song Parliament's 'Come In Out Of The Rain' was much more disappointing. Although its material was good it became very repetitive and descended into a dirge. Whether dealing with love or exploitation soul music does tend to look on the dark side of life, and so it is with this album. It is for this reason that Tyrone Davies's 'Can't Get Enough Of You' stands out like a sore thumb. It is the only track on the album which is optimistic and is a celebration of the lovemaking he enjoys with his partner. Having said that, it may be a little too explicit for some tastes. I've already mentioned the tracks which are good, but the worst is probably Holland Dozier Holland's own digression into performing with 'Why Can't We Be Lovers'. My advice to them would be to stick with producing.
