It is often said that sequels are never as good as first releases, and this is probably true of this second compilation from Debutante. Nonetheless it is still a worthwhile offering as the difference between this and the first volume is minimal. Once again Chris King has trawled through the vaults to produce a compilation of Motown releases that failed to make it commercially but became cult sounds on the Northern Scene. Surprisingly however this CD does contain one or two tracks which gained national recognition (Tell Me It Is Just A Rumour Baby, I Ain't Going Nowhere, Two can have a party). It was released to tie in with Motown's 40th. birthday and will certainly have as much appeal with Motown aficionados as it does with the Northern Soul crowd. My personal favourites include 'Suspicion' by the Originals, 'Sweet Thing' by the Spinners and 'Tune Up' by Junior Walker and the All-Stars. Track Listing:- Originals - Suspicion The Marvelettes - Your Love Can Save Me Eddie Holland - Just Ain't Enough Love The Velvelettes - Lonely Girl Am I Brenda Holloway - Lonely Boy Shorty Long - Baby Come Home To Me Jimmy Ruffin - I Gotta Let You Go Marvin Gaye - When I Feel the Need Patrice Holloway - For the Love of Mike Contours - Baby Hit and Run Jr. Walker & the All Stars - Tune Up Edwin Starr - My Weakness is You Martha Reeves & the Vandellas - One Way Out Jr. Walker & the Allstars - I Ain't Goin' Nowhere Isley Brothers - Tell Me It Is Just A Rumour Tammi Terrell - Two Can Have A Party Carolyn Crawford - My Smile Is Just A Frown Turned Upside Down Bobby Taylor - Oh I've Been Blessed The Spinners - I'll Always Love You The Velvelettes - These Things Will Keep Me Loving You Tammi Terrell - This Old Heart of Mine The Velvelettes - A Bird in the Hand (Is Worth Two In the Bush) The Spinners - Sweet Thing Four Tops - Lonely Lover |
