I've never made a secret of the fact that I love my soul heavily laden with plenty of Sax, but I have to confess if anyone is likely to change my mind about which instrument enhances a soul composition best then it is Willie Mitchell blowing on his trumpet. Willie is probably best known for his work as a composer and arranger, and there is little doubt that both Al Green and Ann Peebles owe him a huge debt for being the inspiration behind their meteoric rises to stardom. On this CD however we get a taste for Willie Mitchell the performer. Besides his instrumental versions of Stax masterpiece 'Who's Making Love' and James Brown's 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag' he shows that he is equally at home with blusier numbers. He makes an admirable job of the Kingsmen's 'Louie Louie' and 'Soul Serenade'. Despite the fact this is Southern Soul at its best there are still two wonderful offerings for the Northern Fans as both "That Driving Beat" and "The Champion" are included on the compilation. Brilliant stuff for anyone who loves a blaring trumpet. If I've any complaint then it is the fact that fifteen tracks just aren't enough.
