Ever since I heard "Wade in The Water" reverberating round the Northern Soul Clubs I've always been a fan of Ramsey Lewis. Many budget soul compilations I have since bought have included other instrumentals by him. Amongst these are Dancing In The Street, Uptight, A Hard Day's Night, Since You've Been Gone, Soul Man, Hi Heel Sneakers, and his biggest hit, his own inimitable rendition of Dobie Gray's, "The In Crowd". In most cases I usually prefer his version to the original. When heard as a single artist with a single number on compilations with other performers, Ramsey Lewis comes across as very funky pianist indeed. When heard back to back on his own albums amongst his other works however realisation begins to dawn. Ramsey Lewis is not a soul musician, nor makes any pretence at being so. His feet are firmly planted in the Jazz Genre. What he likes to do however is to plunder the Soul and R&B charts to find material to which he can give his own jazz laden interpretation. Don't get me wrong I love this compilation, especially his treatment of Len Barry's "One Two Three", but this CD is not for the Soul purist. It will undoubtedly appeal to jazz fans in the main, but I hope it also finds a niche with those soul fans who like to hear their music performed with a completely different flavour to what they are used to.
