In keeping with Joe Boy policy this CD has bee arranged to look as much like an old 45 as possible. It has even been given a notional A-side and B-side despite the fact there is only one surface which plays continuously. Side A is entitled 'The Wigan Years 1973-1981' whilst side B is entitled 'The Spirit of Wigan 1981-1998'. The A-side is very traditional Northern Soul with most of the tracks being either uptempo or mid-tempo shufflers. They are also well established or at least familiar to most Northern Soul Affictionados. What is unusual is that most of them haven't been released on CD before, the exceptions being 'Just Like the Weather' - Nolan Chance, 'That's My Girl' -Dee Clark, 'Tear Stained Face' - Don Varner and 'Only When You're Lonely' - Holly Maxwell. I can only guess that these have been included to fill up space because they must all feature on at least half a dozen other compilations already. Side B 'The Spirit of Wigan' has many more new releases with only 'Hung Up On Your Love' by the Montclairs and 'My Hang Up Is You' by the Skull Snaps having been, to the best of my knowledge, released before. This 'side' undoubtedly has a more crossover feel to it but I am confused as to how these tracks have been categorised. What exactly do they mean by 'the Spirit of Wigan 1981-1998'? Both the tracks already mentioned were already established long before 1981 and were big favourites at Blackpool Mecca. Despite the fact I have never heard the Impressions or the Major Lance songs before I would be very suprised if either of them were still operating in the 1980's. There may be some significance in the fact that the cover notes neglect to include any release dates Forgiving Joe Boy their bizzare categorisation, this is an excellent album with many new tracks never previously released on CD. In all honesty I couldn't find a single duff one amongst them. My personal favourites are The Winston's 'Colour Him Father', which is a rare testement to parenthood, 'What Does It Take To Win Your Love- The Electrifying Cashmeres, 'It's All In The Way' by Mousie and the Traps and 'Every Beat Of My Heart - Du-ettes Track Listing: Side A - The Wigan Years 1973-1981 Don't Let Me Down - Fred Hughes Think It Over Twice - Sam Fletcher Every Beat Of My Heart - Duettes I Still Can't Get You - Joseph Moore Baby - Ellie Greenwich Just Like the Weather - Nolan Chance Only When You're Lonely - Holly Maxwell That's My girl - Dee Clark It's All In The Way - Mousie & The Traps Tear Stained Face - Don Varner Baby What Has Happened To Our Love - Ringleaders What Difference Does It Make - Kenny Shepherd Lover Come back - Jackie Beavers Side B - The Spirit of Wigan 1981-1998 What Does It Take (To Win Your Love) - Electrifying Cashmeres Congratulations Baby - Barbara West Little Young Lover - Major Lance Hung Up On Your love - Montclairs My Hang Up Is You- Skull Snaps If You Really Need A Freind - Bobby Foster I'll Always Be Here - Impressions Colour Him Father - Winstons Janice (Don't Be So Blind To Love) - Skip Mahoney This Will Be A Night To Remember - Eddie Holman So Many Sides Of You - Bobby Womack
