Given the dominance enjoyed by Detroit, Chicago and Southern Labels it is nice to see a compilation released of New Jersey Soul. The compilation contains several tracks which will be of interest to Northern Soul Fans including 'I've Got The Need' and a funky re-release of his R&B classic 'Any Day Now' by Chuck Jackson. In my view one of the most under-rated male voices of soul music. There are also more uptempo numbers from Donnie Elbert; 'Where Did Our Love Go' and 'Sweet Baby', and the rollicking classic from Larry Saunders, 'On the Real Side'. Donnie also offers his own rendition of the R&B classic 'Love is Strange'. There is nothing on the album which might be considered deep or even down tempo, the nearest would be Phillipe Wynne's 'All The Way' but even this is really mid-tempo. For dancers there is a nice balance which will appeal equally to the Northern and Disco Markets, but for people who want a quiet night in with a gentle ballad this really isn't the place to look.
