Title: Out On The Floor

Although the sleeve notes did not seem to include a release date for this compilation it is quite clearly one of Goldmine's earlier offerings.  It was put out at a time when Northern soul CD's were still relatively new and as such there was still a plethora of good tracks to choose from.  Kev Roberts was clearly spoilt for choice when he assembled this compilation because every one is a real humdinger.  Interestingly enough, apart from one exception, every track is taken from the 60's (1965-69) and represents the music being played at the small specialist clubs long before Wigan Casino was even a twinkle in Russ Winstanley's eye.  Apart from this one exception every single track is also a bona fida piece of Soul History which makes the inclusion of 'Reaching for the Best' wholly incongruous.   In the first place it is the only track from the 70's (1975 to be exact), and in the second place unlike the other tracks it is a 'Tailor Made', a record produced specifically to feed the Northern Dance Craze but who's soul credentials are suspect to say the least.  Don't get me wrong, I actually like the song and consider it to be Ian Levine finest, but on this compilation it is an anachronism which sticks out like a sore thumb.

The CD is excellent overall and forgiving Kev Roberts (the compiler) his moment of insanity every soul fan will undoubtedly treasure this album.  My personal favourites are 'Nobody but Me' by the Human Beinz, the classic blue-eyed anthem 'Queen of Fools' by Barbara Mills and the title track 'Out on the Floor' by Dobie Gray.
