It is often said that sequels are never as good as their predecessors, but if this is generally true, and I believe it is, then this CD is the exception which proves the general rule. Like its predecessor this album was released when there still plenty of unissued material to choose from (1996 to be exact, Goldmine remembered to include the date this time around) and if anything the selection of tracks is even more imaginative than that of its forerunner (Out On the Floor, GSCD 58). Although still heavily biased towards the sixties it does include several good tracks from the seventies with Alfie Davidson's excellent 'Love is a Serious Business' being the most recent from 1979. Apart from one or two notable exceptions all the tracks are of the usual high tempo, but contrasted by some occasional slower offerings such as Madeline Bell's 'Picture Me Gone'. Although the first volume was excellent this one gels a lot better and does not include any eccentricities of its predecessor. I cannot see any Northern Soul Fan not being prepared to put his hand in his pocket for this one. Personal favourites off this compilation are 'At the Top of The Stairs' by the Formations, 'A Little Bit Hurt' by Julian Covay and the blue-eyed soul offering from Frankie Valli 'I'm Gonna Change' Track Listing:- Bobby Hebb - Love Love Love Jay & The Techniques - Apple Peaches Pumpkin Pie Franki Valli - You're Ready Now Jackie Edwards - I Feel So Bad Newby & Johnson - Sweet Happiness Jerry Butler - Moody Woman Julian Covey & the Machine - A Little Bit Hurt Alfie Davidson - Love is a Serious Business Don Covay - It's Better To Have (And Don't Need) Jimmy Cliff - Waterfall Wynder K Frog - Green Door The Flamingos - Boogaloo Party Bob Brady - More, More, More Of Your Love The Ambers - Potion Of Love The Formations - At The Top Of The Stairs Ronnie Walker - You're The One Toni Basil - Breakaway Madeline Bell - Picture Me Gone Kelly Garrett - Love Is The Only Answer Cobblestone - Trick Me, Treat Me Righteous Brothers Band - Rat Race Bobby Hebb - You Want To Change Me Charles Wright - Keep Saying (You Don't Love Nobody) The Millionaires - Never For Me Mickey Moonshine - Name It You Got It The Burning Bush - Keeps On Burning Jamo Thomas - I Spy (For The FBI) Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - I'm Gonna Change |
