This compilation is a nice mix of different styles from Aretha Franklin's younger sister Erma. Most of the tracks were released in 1961 and therefore represent a transitional sound from R&B to early soul. The exceptions are 'Abracadabra' and 'Love Is Blind' both of which were released in 1963 and 'Piece Of My Heart' which was released in 1967. The two '63 releases are much more developed in soul terms than the '61 tracks but it is the fabulous 'Piece Of My Heart' which expresses the genre in its full maturity. Although it failed to do much at the time this song became a belated hit thanks to Levi's using it to advertise their jeans. Despite her wonderful voice Erma never enjoyed the same success as her sister and one reason may be that she diversified much more and did not focus on a single market. Besides her R&B/Soul this compilation contains three very strong Jazz tracks, 'Detour Ahead', 'Time after Time' and 'the Man I Love'. The compilation is subtitled 'The Best of Erma Franklin', so I was disappointed not to find her wonderful cover of Jackie Wilson's 'Sweetest Feeling' on it. None-the-less 'Abracadabra', 'Piece of My Heart' and 'What Kind Of Girl (Do You Think I Am)' are strong recordings and there was none on the compilation I did not like. Lets hope its release gives Erma the recognition she deserves. Track Listing:- Piece Of My Heart Hello Again Everytime We Say Goodbye What Kind Of Girl (Do You Think I Am?)
