No compromise about this album, no jazz, no r&b, just pure soul music at its very best. The compilation begins with Fontella's greatest hit, 'Rescue Me' which has always been a big favourite of mine. 'I Surrender' uses the same backing track but with new lyrics. Other songs such as 'Recovery', 'I Can't Rest' and 'Leave It In The Hands Of Love' work to a similar formula but it sounds so wonderful that I'm not prepared to complain. Its main mechanism is Fontella delivering her powerful vocals above a catchy clip clop beat. Unlike so many other artists she does not sacrifice clarity to achieve her power as every syllable is crisply and cleanly delivered. It is not just the uptempo numbers on which Fontella excels but also her mid-tempo and slow ballads as well. I particularly liked her cleverly constructed duets with Bobby McClure in which each of them blast out their own perspectives on bad situations. They illustrate beautifully how lack of communication between the sexes can lead to misunderstandings and fall-outs. This is one fabulous album on which Fontella delivers a genuine slice of soul. She takes the listener through the gamut of every conceivable emotion as we either suffer mercilessly or revel in unbounded joy. Excellent stuff all round. Personal favourites, 'I Surrender', 'Don't Jump' and 'The Soul Of A Man', but in all honesty there isn't a bad track on it.
