Title: Soul Survivors (Vol 1)

Ref: STAC2869

Label: Telstar

Compiled by Ex-Wigan DJ Russ Winstanley and sub-titled '40 Northern Soul Anthems' this is the best selling Northern Soul CD of all time.  This is undoubtedly because many of its tracks have been hand picked for their commercial appeal.  There weren't many Northern Soul records which crossed over into the pop sphere, but those that did are all included on this compilation.  This means that its market is not just restricted to Northern Aficionado's but also to 60's/70's pop devotees and more general Soul followers as well.  The 'Pseudo Soulies', those people who liked to think they were into Northern Soul because it was hip to do so, but  who never got beyond dipping their toes in the water will buy this by the bucketful.  It is a compilation which just about covers everything they are ever likely to have heard.

Because most of the Northern Soul tracks which ever crossed over to become Pop hits are included on this compilation I doubt if Telstar could ever manufacture a similar sequel.   There just isn't enough material left to make one.  Indeed, even the credentials of some of the tracks on this album are somewhat questionable.   Since when was KC and the Sunshine Band's 'Queen of Clubs' a Northern Soul track?  For those people for whom commercially is not an issue there are still many of records on this CD which represent good quality soul music, and this should not be invalidated by the fact that they have also been embraced by the Pop world.  It therefore still represents good value for money and would make an excellent starting point for those wishing to sample Northern soul for the first time.

My favourite tracks are Marlena Shaw's majestic 'Wade in the Water', Judy Street's 'What' and the classic 'Do I love you (Indeed I do)' by Frank Wilson.
