In my review of the first compilation I stated that it would be difficult to make a sequel of a similar nature and my opinion has been vindicated by this offering.    That is not to say that it is a bad CD, in fact from a soul perspective it is unquestionably better.  The difference is that this compilation is based on the records which became giants of the Northern Scene but not of the broader pop context.   Apart from one or two notable exceptions the result is much more soulful album, but not one which is destined to become the commercial success of its predecessor.

In his search to repeat the previous volume's commercial success Russ again deviates from the Northern Code to find tracks with which the general public might be familiar.   For this reason we find songs like Wayne Gibson's 'Under my Thumb', 'Shame' by Evelyn King and 'Lady Marmalade' by Labelle included.  The first is a Pop song, pure and simple whilst the second and third would be more at home on a Funk compilation.  His frustration is further illustrated by the addition of Curtis Mayfield's 'Move on Up', a track which was also placed on the first volume (though admittedly in a shorter version) Thankfully these are exceptions rather than the general rule and all the remaining tracks are bona-fida Soul as played on the Northern circuit.  As a result there is still plenty on this CD to tempt the faithful and, just like the first volume, it would make a good starting point for those wishing to sample this style of music for the first time.

My Personal favourites off this volume are the excellent 'If You Ask Me' by Jerry Williams, 'You've been Cheatin'' by the Impressions and 'House for Sale' by Millie Jackson.
