At a time when so many of the Soul Specialist Labels seem to be scrattin round to find classic Northern tracks which have not previously been released MCA have come up with this excellent compilation. It is not a re-vamp of previously released material, nor are the tracks so obscure that they leave even the cognoscenti scratching their heads. Every track is a classic and well known anthem and as such will be treasured by the Northern Soul faithful. This selection is almost exclusively high tempo but there is some change of pace from The Natural Four and Clyde McPhatter to offer some kind of contrast. The music on this CD cannot be described as anything other than brilliant, but sadly this is not the case for the sleeve notes which are Spartan to say the least. They are also reproduced in such a minuscule font that that there is a danger of them giving the reader eyestrain. The front cover showing a soulies travel bag is reasonable but a little unimaginative, unfortunately the two Mick Jagger lookalikes performing their acrobatics on the back of the sleeve are nothing short of embarrassing. They represent a stereotyped image of Northern Soul soul which is still rooted in the seventies and from which times have clearly moved on. Personal favourites on this compilation are 'That's Not Love' by Holly St James, 'Take Away the Pain Stain' by Patti Austin and 'Soul Self Satisfaction' by Earl Jackson.
