This compilation is taken from the releases of San Francisco's 'Loadstone' label. The label was set up by a bus driver by the name of Walter Curry Stone. As ever Kent's sleeve notes are excellent and give detailed accounts of both Stone's life and the development of his label. Although Loadstone was formed in the sixties most of the tracks are taken from the seventies (Seven from the sixties, thirteen from the seventies and four which had previously been unreleased). It also covers a broad spectrum of Soul Styles. The 'Chandaliers' tracks were all made in the sixties and sound the most dated. They produce a sound which barely seems to have left the doo-wop era. The album also contains some funk with the tracks 'One Monkey Can't Stop the Show', 'Love Bandit', 'Funky Driver on a Funky Bus' and 'Headed for the Streets' which is by far the best of the four. 'Inseparable' by Herman Harper was one of the tracks previously unissued and for my money should have remained so. This is very middle of the road stuff and would be more at home in a cabaret lounge than on a soul CD. No soul compilation would ever be complete without a couple of slow ballads and a few of these are also included but none of them are anything special. The highlight of this album are unquestionably the Celeste Hardie Tracks, 'You Touched the Inner Part of Me' and 'Thank You Love'. I've not really heard too much from this lady before, but I'm swiftly becoming a big fan. This is a pleasant compilation covering a variety of soul styles. Some of the tracks are very ordinary, but these are offset by some stupendous songs. Anyone who is not fixed into a soul style would certainly find something to their taste on this album.
