This compilation is an amalgam of Johnny Taylor's original vinyl LP's 'Taylored in Silk' and 'Supertaylor' with three bonus tracks thrown in for good measure. Despite the fact these were all early seventies releases Taylor doesn't even consider compromising his artistic integrity to go 'Disco'. Every track is a wonderfully crafted smouldering ballad. All seem to be effortlessly sung without even a hint of strain on his vocal cords. It isn't just the delivery that makes this album special but also his psychological awareness. This is classic soul at its best and an album which no fan can afford to be without. In typical Taylor fashion most of the songs are either slow or mid-tempo ballads, with the occasional hint of funk from the Stax Session Band. 'Just One Moment' is a very early cheatin' song on which Taylor tells his mistress that the arguments pain he will suffer at the hands of his wife are well worth the time he has spent with her. Well delivered with plenty of empathy for the but hardly the best moral standpoint to adopt. 'It's Cheaper To Keep Her', is unusual for Taylor because of its strong Jazz influences which are out of keeping with the rest of the album. None-the-less it is a wonderful track in which he philosophises about remaining in a loveless marriage because he can't afford the financial costs of separation. 'It Don't Pay To Get Up In The Morning' is also unusual in that it is not a love song. It's a song about the hardships of life, a life in which he has no job, is accruing bad debts, has to pay prices he cannot afford and suffers a nagging wife to boot. On listening to this song your heart really goes out to the him. The only other track which digresses from the relationship's theme is 'Love Depression' which is a song bemoaning the lack of care and consideration people are prepared to show each other. On these two tracks the master balladeer proves that he can handle other material besides love songs with equal conviction. A wonderful compilation, and if I have any complaints at all it is only for the fact it doesn't include Taylor's superlative 'Love in the Streets (Sure Ain't As Good As The Love At Home)'.
