Title: The Wigan Casino Story

Ref: GSCD 51

Label: Goldmine

An important Northern Soul album which marked a significant change in emphasis from anything which had gone before.  The tracks on previous compilations had usually been linked either by the artist, the producer or the original American labels from which the tracks had been taken.  This CD took the playlist from one of the north's major clubs and used that as its starting point.  It is a recipe which proved to be an enormous success and one from which Goldmine has never looked back.

There are two reasons why this has proved to be such a winning formula.  Firstly it holds strong nostalgic appeal for the old NS faithful and for past Casino members in particular.  It is an appeal which has been shrewdly exploited, not only by the track listings but also by the sleeve notes and front cover as they have been designed around old photographs and memorabilia of the club.  Secondly a compilation of this nature will inevitably have more diversity and contrast than one which has been based around a single artist or producer.  The CD contains tracks which are as diverse as 'Dance Dance Dance' by the Casualeers,  'I go to pieces' by Gerri Granger and the funky flavoured 'Flasher' by Mistura.

All the tracks will all be well known to NS veterans but for what its worth my personal favourites are 'What' by Judy Street, 'Put Your Arms Around Me' by the Sherry's and 'You Don't Love Me' by the Epitome of Sound.  No old Soulie worth their salt could possibly be without this album and it would also provide a good introduction for anybody new coming onto the scene.  It certainly contains more than a small flavour of what Wigan was about.
