Cybersoul

Name of Website: ''Moveonup'

URL: HTTP://www.move.u-net.com

Web Author: Peter Lang

The Moveonup Website was specifically set up to advertise weekly soul functions at the Underground Club in Leeds. The site is entered through a very tidy homepage with a futuristic TV set showing the Moveonup Logo. The user then clicks on an arrow icon to enter the site proper. A frame on the left of the page contains the menu which is icon driven whilst the contents of each page are displayed on the right. The author shows considerable design skills in keeping the pages simple yet attractive. The site is also technically sound as everything I tested worked exactly as it was supposed to. It came as no surprise to find that Pete Lang also advertised his services as a professional web author.

The fact that this website was created to advertise a specific club meant that much of the sites content was of local interest only. These pages included such items as, the top ten requests at the club, and other venues where the resident DJ's were appearing. Surprisingly they did not include any details of how to book them. Pages which were of a much broader interest were:- Records and CD's; Books and Magazines; Links; Flyers; and one Icon which dropped off the bottom of my screen which I was unable to read. This was the only technical fault I could find.

The 'Records and CD's' page provided details of how to contact dealers, which is very useful for those of us still collecting vinyl. 'Books and magazines' was rather disappointing however as it did little more that than acknowledge the existence of the various publications. This section might be improved by some brief reviews and in the case of the books there was not even any information, such as an ISBN Number or bookshop provided to help people acquire them. The best part of this site was the 'links' page, which contained dozens of URL's to other Soul Sites. They were even classified under a variety of categories such as Magazines, General, Re-Issue Labels, Stax Related, Record Shops/Mail Order, Motown, Misc, Artists and Bands, NS Soul Sites, and Fellow Underground Clubs. Anyone wanting to research any aspect of Soul Music could do far worse than start on this page. The Flyer Collection was exactly that, a collection of scanned images of flyers advertising Moveonup events. At first I was impressed by how professional they looked, then thought, 'they look familiar' before realising why. I'm not going to explain it so if anybody wants to find out they're just going to have to visit this site and look for themselves. The final Icon, the one which had dropped off the bottom of my screen, turned out to be adverts for future events and a few snippets of Soul 'News'. Nothing too exciting.

All in all a very tidy little site which was well presented and technically sound. Nothing too ambitious but what it did it did well. It contained a good balance of local information and pages that were of broader interest. I was particularly impressed with their links page. It also seemed to be pretty regularly updated. A site well worth visiting particularly if you are visiting Leeds on a Wednesday Night and fancy a good night out.

Soulfully Yours,

John Ponomarenko
